Hunter Biden’s legal team called on the judge overseeing his Delaware firearm charges case to subpoena former President Donald Trump and several former Trump administration officials on Wednesday.

Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, maintains that the investigation into the president’s son only arose because of “relentless, improper, and partisan pressure.” In addition to Trump, Biden is seeking subpoenas against former Attorney General Bill Barr, former acting Deputy AG Richard Donoghue and former acting AG Jeffrey Rosen.

“The initial investigation was born out of a broader investigation into Mr. Biden’s taxes and
foreign business dealings,” The request reads. “Public reporting presents several instances that appear to suggest relentless, improper, and partisan pressure that then-President Trump applied to Messrs. Rosen, Donoghue, and Barr in connection with the investigation of Mr. Biden. “

“Mr. Biden is seeking specific information from three former DOJ officials and the former President that goes to the heart of his defense that this is, possibly, a vindictive or selective prosecution stemming from an unrelenting campaign of harassment since the last administration, which violates Mr. Biden’s Fifth Amendment rights under the Constitution,” it continued.

Biden’s gun crimes trial is not scheduled to begin until after January 2024. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Faced with one count of making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm; another for making a false statement relating to information required to be kept by a federally licensed firearms dealer; and another count of possession of a firearm by a person who is unlawfully using or addicted to a controlled substance.

This summer, Biden agreed to plead guilty misdemeanor tax charges and would also have avoided prosecution on gun charges if he had stayed out of trouble for two years. It was the culmination of a year-long investigation by federal prosecutors into the president’s son’s business dealings, and the agreement would have prevented criminal proceedings and avoided weeks of Bidens headlines as the the election.
