(CNN) An air cargo container carrying more than $15 million in gold and other valuables went missing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Monday, and police are still trying to figure out who was behind the high-value heist.
The aircraft was landed and the cargo was taken to a holding facility early Monday night, “as per normal procedure,” Peel Regional Police’s Stephen Duivesteyn said at a news conference Thursday at the airport.
Then, “this high-value container was removed through illegal means from the holding facility,” he said.
Police would not say whether security cameras captured the theft, which airline company delivered the container or who owned the container.
“What I can say is that the container contains a high value cargo, it contains gold but not exclusively gold and contains other things of financial value,” said Duivesteyn, estimating the contents is worth about $15 million ($20 million Canadian). dollars).
Police would not speculate on whether it was a “professional” job, saying it was too early in the investigation.
“We’re three days in, so our investigators have their eyes open in every way. So we don’t want to make a mistake and focus on one particular area, we’re kind of keeping a broad view here, so we’re looking at all angles how this item was stolen,” Duivesteyn said.
The container is described as 5 or 6 square feet in size.
“I would suggest that this is an isolated incident. It is very rare,” said Duivesteyn, adding that the investigation is not expected to disrupt any operations at the airport, which admit it The busiest in Canada.
