A 22-year-old postal worker and a 75-year-old man believed to be a street vendor were both arrested following a confrontation at Canal and Mulberry streets in Lower Manhattan on Saturday morning, police said.
The female postal worker told responding police officers that the senior citizen hit her on the head with a cane, and she retaliated.
The unidentified fighters were both taken into custody following the 10:10 am incident. Charges are pending, a department spokeswoman said Saturday afternoon.
The postal worker refused medical attention at the scene and there was no immediate word on the 75-year-old’s condition, police said.
Canal Street residents don’t know what sparked the outrage, but some, like gift shop employee Kamal, said they saw the old man lying on the pavement afterward.
A woman selling fruit allegedly pushed the man to the ground by the postal worker.
Other vendors on the block said the 75-year-old was a regular street vendor, selling masks and knockoff items on Canal Street.
Another gift shop employee said the postal worker and 75-year-old were “yelling at each other” until police arrived and took the two into custody.
